On 17th November 2011, the Department of Sociology successfully organized its first department fest titled, ‘Socio(logically) – A Celebration of Theories.’
The fest was a forum for student creativity within the academic context that was creatively expanded. A component of the course, Sociological Theories 1, the fest was an opportunity for students to reflect on social theory beyond the general limits of the classroom.
The event included a poster exhibition executed an organized by students which attempted to reflect on the idea of theory through a combination of written text and series of visual languages, songs and poetry recitation that addressed issues of social stratification, politics and so on which were initially discussed via various social theories learned in class, the presentation of four papers by students based on their class work, and a panel discussion and two lectures related to the theme of theory delivered by two guest speakers in collaboration with the Fortnightly Lecture Series. The speakers were Prof. Sheena Jain (Department of Sociology, Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi) and
Dr. Santosh Kumar (Ambedkar University, Delhi). The visiting scholars,
overwhelmed by the festival, expressed that sociological theory is no longer
boring due to the dynamic engagement and interventions of young scholars.
